Blokart sailing is an exciting, fast-paced land sport harnessing the power of the wind. Using a lightweight, three-wheeled craft, you can sail across open spaces with surprising speed. Whether you are wanting a new recreation hobby or a competitive challenge, it’s easy to learn to sail a blokart and a wholly sustainable way to enjoy the great outdoors.

Blokart sailing is an exhilarating sport across all levels of participation, and it attracts people of all ages and sailing ability. With frequent wind and a variety of locations, Canterbury is an ideal place for blokart sailing.

The Canterbury Blokart Club Inc. was established in 2004 to further the sport through racing, non-competitive sailing events, coaching and a range of other Club activities. The Club meets most Sundays at the former RNZAF Base Wigram, now home to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand (AFMNZ). The site is owned by the New Zealand Defence Force. The area used by the Club includes the hangar apron and runway taxiway, and when the wind really blows, adjacent grass areas too. Informal sailing is occasionally held at the beach. Tech-nights, training days and other activities help Club members learn about sailing theory and practice, blokart maintenance, racing rules and blokart equipment and ‘kart accessories. Regular social events for members and their families are also held.

We welcome newcomers and provide coaching and encouragement in a low-risk and controlled environment. Our members enjoy sharing their passion for blokart sailing, creating a supportive atmosphere where everyone feels included.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to harness the power of the wind on land, now’s your chance! Come along and experience the excitement for yourself. Try sailing one of the Club blokarts for just $30.00/45 minutes, or simply watch the action. We are at Wigram most Sundays from about 11.00 a.m. … so, come on over, and join the fun!

Where to find us on Sundays

The vehicle entrance to where the Club sails is directly opposite 12 Harvard Avenue and is in between the entrance to the Air Force Museum of NZ (AFMNZ) car park and Archives NZ (15 Harvard Avenue). The gate should be closed when you arrive. Even if the gate is open when you arrive, please close it once you have passed through. Keeping to the right, follow the fence-line, (see black arrow on map below) drive south toward the control tower where you will see vehicles parked and blokart activity.

The AFMNZ entrance gate to where the Canterbury Blokart Club Inc. sail.
Built in 1939, the former RNZAF Base Wigram control tower, 69 Corsair Drive.

Part of the site is used on most Sunday mornings until midday by the Wigram Model Aero Club. You will see their vehicles parked on the grass to your left as you drive toward the control tower. Please avoid their site (shown as a red square on map below) by keeping to the right as you head toward the control tower. Once you reach the runway taxiway, park where you see other cars parked. If vehicles are parked on the other side of the runway taxiway take care when crossing the taxiway as there may be blokarts sailing along it … and blokarts do not have brakes. For safety and security reasons, please identify yourself as a visitor to a Club member.

Please note that there is no public access through the AFMNZ to where we sail.
